Yes Johnny, i do know how to push the record button! Lisa
Huge fields and a great multi-cornered figure eight course made some great racing. Strada was represented by new member, Daniel Eaton, Johnny Angelone, Drew Albert, Mary Jane Colson, Jerri Manley, Michael Hemmerlin, Don Henley and Madi Cocuzza. The junior field was so large (at least 25 riders), they split out the junior women but combined all of the junior men's age groups from 10-18 years old which made a very interesting race. The race was probably the fastest of the season but Don Henley and Daniel Eaton managed to stay active at the front of the pack and never looked in serious trouble. Michael Hemmerlin decided to race in spite of a terrible cough and was off the back with several of the young riders, however, they formed their own group and worked well together. A few laps later his wheezing could be heard from the side of the road and he finally packed it in, recognizing he was unable to continue in his condition. A noble effort and great bike handling Michael! Madi rode in the junior womens field that included several women up to and including 18 year olds. At the bottom of the age groups, she had quite a challenge but was finally dropped from the best riders. She fought on to finish and vowed to come back to the state of fitness she had attained before her crash.
Most of the top juniors in the state were present at the race and the pace continued with attack after attack until the pack dropped several riders. As the large group entered the final corners, our Strada jerseys were still at the front of the pack and Daniel Eaton scored an outstanding second place in his age group. Watching him race and contest the finish would convince anyone that he had been riding for years. Don Henley also faced the problem of more experienced riders but scored a great third place finish in his age group. Some of these juniors went on to contest the Cat 3 men's race later!
Mary Jane Colson and Jerri Manley joined another huge pack...the largest women's race they have entered in their short racing careers. In spite of the great field and numerous corners, both were energized from their first events this year and were determined fight in the group until the end. The race started with an immediate breakaway and the field strung out. Our riders were amazing and showed incredible improvement. Although Jerri was finally dropped after numerous attacks, she managed to stay with the pack longer and more confidently than just one month ago. Mary Jane rode like a rider possessed and stayed in the pack to past the 80% point. Great effort and experience for our women!
Drew Albert entered the Cat 2/3 event which, again, was huge and filled with a lot of aggressive riding and attacks. Still, feeling less than 100%, he did not score a top position in the sprint but was in contact and battling with the leaders throughout the race. Most of us would be happy to ride as fast as Drew even when he is not at his best!
